Design team of space satellite "Mayak" announced the beginning of preparations for the launch of the first orbital spacecraft in Russia, created with the assistance of crowdfunding. The main objective of the project is to promote astronautics and space research in Russia, as well as to increase the attractiveness of scientific and engineering professions among the youth.
The head of the project and a well-known popularizer of cosmonautics Alexander Shaenko in spring 2015 became the head of the educational program "Modern cosmonautics" at UMech. Students of the educational program are actively involved in the development and launch of the satellite, in particular, the design of the solar reflector system disclosure. The 4th-year students, who are specialized in the field of computer-aided design (CAD), are also involved in the project.
The launch is scheduled for 2016 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome with "Soyuz-2" rocket with the upper stage "Fregat". "Mayak" team signed an agreement on launch with "Roscosmos" public corporation.
